Absolutely none today despite having plenty of time I ended up doing some reading on a Norwegian SS unit, which wasn’t a great book, poorly written and cheap reproduction on the photos.
I’m now doing some work downstairs again with the weather getting warmer finally. I went and did an airbrushing lesson at my local hobby store and whilst that gave me some inspiration the reality a few days later was not inspiring still. At least I got paint coming out but it was still pooling in little drops on the model. I’ll be trying again over the coming week.
The Ukrainian USV now has one side fitted with the second still to be done.
The TaGo needs the wings cleaned up again but the body is now together at least. It’s a very typical short run fare with the PSR cycle.
My Wirbelwind build ended badly with me making an unrepairable mistake (by me at least ) and so it ended in the “Well of tears”.
I’m still upstairs in the secondary site with work on the Ta Go continuing. The body and wings are now together and on the second stage of the PSR cycle. If there is a third cycle it should be minor.
I’ve also started the MicroMir Ukrainian USV boat that they are using. I did a lot of cleanup on a recent phone call and since this week so reasonable progress is being made. I’m going to start assembly this weekend.
Below is a shot of the rather confined bench space and work so far.
Yes I’m not committing to regular Sunday updates again but here’s where I’m up to. Most of the parts have been looked at with much of the construction done. It’s now time to clean up all the loose ends before I start painting the main body.
I got the new magnifying light set up for upstairs. Whilst it’s a much smaller desk space and it needs to be non smelly paints etc it is MUCH warmer than my usual garage space in winter.
I’m working on the Brengun Ta go plane. It’s a typical short run kit of a purpose built kamikaze craft. I’ve even used some wood grain decals for the first time. I think a white background colour rather than using a light wood would have worked better.
I’m still assembling the cockpit area so more on this later.
In the garage on slightly better days I’m still working on the Wirbelwind. The main body is now together and I’m adding small details. Lots of little modelling tasks including painting the rubber band tracks.
Given the wet cold weather expected this week I think it’s fitting to close with some images from recent walks I’ve done locally.
I found Expo a little disappointing this year. There were less traders and Models on show and a few of the clubs seemed to phone in their displays with one of them having only five kits on show and a small sign only.
Whilst I have grumbled in the past about the in-house catering the replacement van outside was also quite poor quality and expensive.
I did manage to pick up the Axis Wings bookazine which looks quite good. The next issue looks even better with some articles on radar units and the X4 amongst others.
Next up is a few favourites from the show.
Plain label ciggy packaging! The last two are a scratchbuild of a Hammerhead from a 90s Sci fi show.
And lastly a shot of Campbell arcade again, still being worked on.
I arrived home with my other son moved in. The view from the model bench is now quite crowded.
I’m still doing work on the Wirbelwind but it’s been quite cold and wet lately so not many sessions. I’ve decided to leave the track depressors that Hase put in as I’ve futzed around enough with the new barrels and the Zimmerit. Otherwise AMS will kill this kit.
I got this kit for the bargain price of only $400.
It’s quite nice and the larger scale means they can show the mesh unlike the 1.72 version but there is a lot of resin to be cut up and sanded. I’m not going to be starting this for a while.
This is the area to my left filled with reference material, sprue and other less used tools including extra paint brushes. These drawers are behind me on my other bench and currently host the second Biber trailer kit I recently obtained and reference material for that as well as now storing old tapes and CDs. I’m sure other things will find their way into the drawers but not yet.And here’s the Wirbelwind – wheels are mostly painted and most of the Zimmerit is on but another push is needed to get it all ready to assemble. The brass guns are now mostly ready to attach with new holes drilled.Departing son.
The cold weather has really set in so it’s the season for thick jackets and fan heaters in my garage. The other half of the garage is now storage for my departing son to the UK and my other son moving back in.
I’m seriously considering a part time move upstairs to my study for much of the next few months. It’s not as well equipped but some modelling is better than none.
There has been a slight rearrangement of the desk area to hopefully make it a little less messy and stop me losing stuff.
Much less tools and paints at the back now. Less useful stuff is now to my left and a lot of paint is packed away apart from the Xtracrylics I’ve thrown out.
The second Biber trailer turned up yesterday to help with the broken parts but I’m still on the Hase Wirbelwind I opened up to fill in the time waiting.
I’ve gone a bit AMS on this as I had the Eduard Zimmerit brass set and I’ve also got some Schatton Modelbau brass barrels. They are still a fair but thinner than the plastic ones and look much better.
The other issue is that of the rubber band tracks needing sagging which Hase have tried to compensate for by putting small lugs on the track topside to provide this sagging. I’d prefer to have this done by the same method as I used for the KV2s ie piano wire shoved through the tracks on top. The brass Zimmerit may prove an issue in doing this.
I’m having to plan the assembly a fair bit to allow for the Zimmerit to ensure I don’t back myself into a corner where I need to trim the brass to get things to fit.
Below are a few shots of where I’m at.
At the moment I’m also compiling a list of kits etc to sell so that’s eating into my bench time as everything needs checking including possible prices.
I’ve had about 10 days off from actual modelling after I lost part 25 from the trailer. The damn thing pinged off into nowhere and despite a frantic look over two days I couldn’t find it.
In despair as this was a crucial almost impossible to duplicate part I decided to actually taking a break and packed the two kits away.
I decided that a clean up was in order. This resulted in chucking out a whole lot of Xtracrylic paints which meant I could move a whole lot of paint off my modelling bench and improve the drawers with better signage on the inside. I also did similar to my tools and paint brushes. It’s amazing how much had built up since the last time I did this.
Apart from the paint drawers the set of general drawers got a going over with some stuff I wasn’t using also getting the chop.
Most of the way through this process I found the missing part a long way away from the other end of the bench where it went missing. Maybe all that activity forced the carpet/concrete monster to cough up the part.
My desk is now considerably tidier as shown below. On the minus side whilst reassembling a airbrush I managed to completely bend the needle on it. Bugger!
I’m away for a few days and apart from restarting the trailer I want to get back into doing some airbrushing practice preparatory to spraying the Huma FW Ta 283 top side.
Mid way through sorting the paintsLabels addedMinimalist desktop – not sure how long it will last but I’m hoping this might reduce the rate of lost parts I’ve been having recently.Side bench with other supplies
Part 25 the offending item – I still can’t work out how it disappeared.
